Top Restaurants across New York City are Making the Big Apple Switch to Little Soya

New York City has long been considered the culinary capital of the United States, and for good reason. With a jaw-dropping array of restaurants, the city offers foodies the finest selections of every variety of cuisine one could ever imagine. It’s a Mecca of sorts for food lovers. That’s why we decided it was high time that the Big Apple got a taste of Little Soya. So, we promoted the amazing Crystal Lee and sent her to New York on a very important mission we like to call the Big Apple Switch – get New York City’s top chefs and restaurants to make the switch to Little Soya’s gluten-free, less-sodium soy sauce.

After only a few short months, the results have been nothing short of phenomenal.

Our takeover of NYC started with a bang back in March when world-famous Nobu New York made the Big Apple Switch to Little Soya. The internationally famous restaurant founded by Nobuyuki Matsuhisa is now offering a tantalizing Little Soya inspired dessert Banana Soy Toban. The word delicious doesn’t even do it justice. With soy caramelized bananas, candied pecans, and Malaga ice cream, it delivers an out of this world flavor you have to taste to believe!

But we didn’t stop there. Not long after, TAO made the Big Apple Switch to Little Soya at its uptown and new downtown location in New York. The trendy restaurant uses our cute, convenient single-use fish packets with their to-go orders, and they’re a hit with diners!

And the list of restaurants making the Big Apple Switch keeps growing by the day. We’ve recently added Sweet Chick, Flatiron Room, Contra NYC, Cecil’s, and a host of other wonderful establishments! We’re taking over NYC one restaurant at a time. Don’t say we didn’t warn you. 2014 is the year of Little Soya!

Remember when we told you that Little Soya had plans for worldwide domination in 2014? Well, that wasn’t entirely true. See, we decided that taking over the world and ridding the planet of bad soy sauce simply wasn’t enough. We have to think bigger. We have to go where no gluten-free soy sauce has gone before. We have to take over the entire universe! And on July 24, 2014, that’s exactly what we’re going to do.

We’re proud to announce that Little Soya was chosen by NASA and Lockheed Martin to make Little Soya the first gluten-free soy sauce in space! That’s right – Little Soya is getting launched to the International Space Station to be used by astronauts from all over the world.

Thanks to the innovative design of our little fishy packets (which earned a coveted silver Sofi award for “Outstanding Innovation in Packaging Design” in 2012), we’ve solved the annoying problem of leakiness and messiness many astronauts encounter when using traditional single-serving soy sauce packets in a zero-gravity environment.

“Our unique, resealable soy sauce packets are ideal for use in outer space because they must be squeezed to dispense soy sauce and they don’t leak,” said Little Soya CEO Gary Murphy.

A Long Journey

Now, all of this didn’t happen overnight. It all started about two years ago when our CEO, Gary Murphy, received a phone call from a Sr. Research Scientist with NASA & Lockheed Martin, stating that one of our astronauts had complained on his last debriefing that when he would open a packet of soy sauce on the International Space Station, the sauce would spew all over (much like it does here on earth). Her department had been tasked to find a solution to their soy sauce problems in space. Gary was told that an astronaut’s wife happened to see Little Soya on the shelves of a local grocery store, HEB. She realized the packaging could be ideal for use in outer space and told NASA about her discovery. Not long after, they called Gary showing interest in Little Soya’s unique packaging and functionality.

After the phone call, Gary and SVP Crystal Lee personally delivered samples out to NASA for testing. He was told the testing process would take about 6 months…

For two years, there wasn’t a peep from anyone at NASA. But finally, earlier this year, we got the call! NASA reps reached out and said they’d take a few cases of Little Soya. The rest, as they say, is history.

Little Soya is all set to become the first gluten-free soy sauce launched into space when it blasts off on Thursday, July 24 at 941pm EDT on the Ariane 5, ATV-5 rocket headed to the International Space Station.

“For a small but strong company like we are, it means the world to us to have a globally recognized name like NASA and Lockheed Martin choose us out of all the possibilities,” Murphy said. “That’s a major, major milestone for us. We have awesome clients, really powerful names. But who can say that their product is going to space? And it’s pretty cool to know that at this point Little Soya will be the first gluten-free soy sauce in space.”

We told you 2014 was going to be a huge year for Little Soya. From launching our all-new website to preparing to launch Little Soya to the International Space Station, things are really starting to take off around here (no pun intended)! But we’re not slowing down. Today, we’re proud to announce another historic venture that Little Soya is taking part in. Together with the Sushi Club of Houston and Kubo’s Sushi Bar & Grill, we are thrilled to announce that Little Soya is co-sponsoring free dinners at the world’s most legendary sushi chef Jiro Ono’s restaurant Sukiyabashi Jiro in Japan.

Jiro Ono, the 89-year-old sushi master, was the subject of the 2011 documentary Jiro Dreams of Sushi. Simply put, his sushi is the best in the world. Sushi lovers flock from all over the world to Ono’s restaurant Sukiyabashi Jiro in Japan to grab one of those 10 coveted seats and enjoy a meal of a lifetime.

The restaurant, hidden in the subway, offers diners only one item – the omakase course, which contains 20 pieces of sushi carefully prepared by hand and served one at a time. That means no appetizers, no rolls. Just fresh fish and rice with a little seasoning and perhaps some soy sauce or a nikiri. The meal runs between $300 and $400 per person, a price diners are glad to fork over for the chance to be one of Ono’s customers. Simply put, it’s the Holy Grail of the sushi world, and precious few of us will ever get to enjoy it.

That’s why when Carl Rosa, President of the Sushi Club of Houston and tour guide to Japan, approached Little Soya with the idea of sponsoring a free dinner at Sukiyabashi Jiro for tourists attending Rosa’s 2014 guided trips to Japan, we jumped at the opportunity.

3 million people in the United States have celiac disease, but only 10% of them have been diagnosed. It’s so important that we raise awareness for this disease so those with celiac disease and gluten intolerances can enjoy a healthier, happier life.

7 Questions with Founder & CEO Gary T. Murphy

Last month, we launched our new series “7 questions with…” Every month, we’ll be shining the spotlight on one our star team members at Little Soya, giving you the chance to get to know them a little better.

Today, we’re talking to the main man himself, Gary Murphy – the Founder, President, and CEO of Little Soya. Or as we like to call him around here, The Soy King. Gary founded Little Soya back in 2009 when the luxurious Caesar’s Palace Hotel & Casino in Las Vegas challenged his old china sourcing company Arisa Global to find them little fish-shaped soy sauce packets. Inspired by his mom’s recommendation to capitalize on the popularity of the unique fish-shaped soy sauce packets, he started Little Soya, and the rest is history.

So, without further ado, here are 7 Questions with Gary Murphy!


What do you do here at Little Soya?

Well, officially I’m the Founder, President & CEO.  But when friends and those close to me ask what I do, I generally say, I sell soy sauce.  And when friends ask “How’s it going?” My standard, but very true answer is, “Still slangin’ the soy.”  At its core, my job and my passion is to build and create the best tasting gluten free soy sauce on this planet.


What 3 words would use to describe yourself?

Dedicated. Sincere. Determined.


What do you like to do in your free time?

You want the short version?  OK, how exciting is this, I call it “Letting my brain rest.” That means doing nothing.  Well, that could be going to watch an independent film at Houston’s River Oaks Theatre or Sundance downtown, or it could be just watching a comedy movie with my beautiful sister Gena on a lazy Sunday afternoon.  Often, it’s truly just spending time with family.  I call it, Family First.


Do you have any special talents?

Umm… I can make a pretty good dinosaur walk out of my double jointed fingers.  Oh you mean, real talents?  Uh, let me think.  The pressure the pressure [if you can guess what movie that quote is from, send your answer to to win a free pack of Little Soya and a kiss from Crystal]. Where were we? Oh yeah, back to talents.  I’m a people person. I have the ability to connect with anyone, be it a bike courier, entry level mail room guy, heavy metal rocker, male, female, young, old, up to the Chairman and CEO of the largest Fortune 500 company in the world.


What is something interesting that your co-workers don’t know about you?

I saved a sea turtle from near death on my last trip to Tulum, Mexico.  He was trapped for hours about 100 yards from the ocean.  Me, a hotel security guard and a server at the restaurant each spent about an hour together, one on each side of this massive 200lb turtle, helping him, inch by inch, free himself from a hole.  Then we watched him slowly but surely waddle back into the ocean. Oh, and I was also a licensed Private Investigator in my other life for about 9 years.


What is the weirdest thing you’ve ever tried Little Soya on?

I tried Little Soya in my cereal once… on ice cream [hey that was good]… in my beer a time or two!


What is your favorite thing to put Little Soya on?

Okay, don’t laugh, pizza! Really it just changes the flavor of any pizza slice instantly.  I also love to put it on pasta, and probably my all-time favorite is to marinate any kind of beef for an hour or two before cooking. Lather those babies up and cook!  Then coat each side once during cooking, and add a dash or two when it’s done!

A secret to share with you… Mom Knows Best!

We are going to let you in on a little secret about our soy sauce.  One little fact that we sometimes will share with just a handful of close ties, but here today, you get to hear the inside scoop.

Fact: Little Soya wouldn’t be the world’s best tasting and greatest gluten-free, less-sodium soy sauce if it wasn’t for one very special, intelligent, and very loving woman – Dolores Murphy, aka “Mrs. Murphy”, the beautiful mother of our founder & CEO Gary Murphy.

Back in 2009, Gary’s old china sourcing company Arisa Global was responsible for sourcing little fish-shaped soy sauce packets for the luxurious Caesar’s Palace Hotel & Casino in Las Vegas.  Seeing how popular the unique fish-shaped packets were for years, Mrs. Murphy saw a golden opportunity. She was actually the first person to recommend to her son, “Gary, if Las Vegas likes your little fish-shaped soy sauce packets so much, maybe Houston restaurants and others would like them too?”

And thus ladies and gentlemen, an idea was born.  At first Gary admits, “I wasn’t really sure if the idea would work and at the time I had big plans to open a consulting company or some much bigger project… not realizing that Mom’s idea would set me on a path 5 years later to now have the fastest growing soy sauce brand in America!  Thanks Mom!”
